Dawn and Ruth Edwards entered the industry in 2004, taking on a tenancy agreement on a pub that was on our disposal list. The pair had decided they wanted a change and thought they’d excel in the hospitality industry, which is just what they did and they now have two Cask Marque awards to prove it!

Dawn said: “When we took on the Chemic in Woodhouse, Leeds, we built on what was already working. The previous people had music nights which we encouraged, we now have regular folk and jazz evenings and we’re a popular local venue. We opened for longer hours, improved standards and organised events such as BBQs and car boots, earning ourselves a CAMRA Community Award. We’re in a student area, but have an atmosphere that attracts a good balance of customers.

“We took on The Wrens Hotel in 2005, just one year after our first pub. This city centre site is totally different, and has just undergone a £250,000 refurbishment to give us 8 letting rooms. We cater for a wide range of customers including the busy pre-theatre trade.

“Our business decisions are always made with each pub’s location, customers and target market in mind. When we achieved Cask Marque at both sites in July it was fantastic showing that we’d got our real ales right at both pubs. It recognised our hard work,
especially at The Wrens where we’d deliberately grown real ale sales, and was an important milestone that demonstrated consistent high standards across our business.”
