A brother and sister team have overseen a major refurbishment as they upgrade their home town pub portfolio.
Gervaise Durran and Alison Beasley now run two pubs in Chepstow, including the King’s Head on Welsh Street which recently re-opened its doors following a £125,000 makeover.
The Punch Taverns owned pub was in need of some work and has been transformed into a sophisticated over 21’s lounge bar with leather sofas and laid back atmosphere.
Gervaise, co-licensee with his sister, said: “We took on the lease last year knowing it needed a facelift and are delighted with the new look of the place.
“The building dates back to the end of the eighteenth century and we were keen to capitalise on its history but create a modern, comfortable feel.”
The Punch funded investment included a complete internal renovation, with a new bar, flooring and lighting.
While work was underway Gervaise and Alison continued running the Five Alls on Hocker Hill Street, which has been theirs for six years.
This first pub is more of a music venue, whereas the King’s Head represents a more sophisticated approach.
Gervaise said: “We’re keen to attract shoppers and workers in the town by offering the ideal venue for a relaxing drink or bite to eat, whether you’ve got half an hour or the whole day!”
The pair’s musical roots, including Alison’s former career as a recording studio manager, will still be present in the King’s Head, with planned blues and jazz nights on the horizon.
Attracting talent from Bristol is high on the agenda, including well known performers from the city’s blues circuit.
They also plan to utilise the garden with summer beer festivals and visitors to the town will be able to take advantage of four bed and breakfast rooms available at around £30 per night.
David Clark, business relationship manager at Punch Taverns, said: “We’re committed to investing around £3.5 million in improving our pubs in this region between now and the end of August.
“The King’s Head is a great example of the improvements that money is making and I know Gervaise and Alison will make the most of it.”
