“The key is to adopt a proactive approach by showing the local authorities that we are on top of the situation and are taking all of the necessary measures to ensure trouble free streets at closing time.” Jason Flack and Andrew Evans, Zulus, Leytonstone

Responsible retailing steers Zulus clear of trouble

A commitment to responsible retailing is helping the management team behind a highly successful Leytonstone venue put a stop to rowdy closing time behaviour.

Jason Flack and Andrew Evans, lessees of the Punch Taverns’ owned Zulus themed bar, have introduced a number of measures aimed at cutting alcohol fuelled disorder.

The removal of cheap alcohol deals; a team of 10 litter-busting door supervisors on Friday and Saturday nights; prominent signage about sensible drinking and free lollipops for customers at the end of the evening are just a few of the measures helping to reduce anti-social behaviour in and around the venue.

Said Jason: “The key is to adopt a proactive approach by showing the local authorities that we are on top of the situation and are taking all of the necessary measures to ensure trouble free streets at closing time.

“We have even started our own task force made up of police, council and residents association members and pub representatives to deal with any issues that may arise.”

And the two men are more than happy to put their money where their mouth is to prove their dedication to responsible retailing.

They are already in discussions with the local council and licensing officers to pay for additional CCTV cameras in the street as well as two police officers to patrol the area around the venue from 1am to 3am.

Jason added: “There are a number of technical and logistical issues we need to overcome if our latest plans are to become a reality.  However, regardless of the outcome, this puts out a clear message to our customers and the local authorities that we couldn’t be more serious about this issue.”
