“The pub has a lovely oldie worldy feel to it and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved in our five and a half years here. I’ve always loved the pub, it was my local, and I always knew it had lots of potential.” Ann Huckvale, Bull & Butcher, Corley, Coventry

A country pub in Coventry has come out on top after receiving the highest number of votes in a prestigious competition recognising and rewarding excellent businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire.

Punch Taverns’ Bull and Butcher in Corley, Coventry received the most votes in the pub category of the Godiva Awards 2008, which are known as the top event in the region recognising businesses with creativity, flair, ingenuity and commitment.

Licensee Ann Huckvale, who has run the Bull and Butcher since 2002, has created a traditional and community focused pub.  The exterior boasts hanging baskets and water features while the interior has a traditional bar for locals as well as a light and airy restaurant, added in 2005.

Ann and her team also cook the majority of meals on the premises, serving up traditional dishes such as rabbit pie and steak and ale pie. Dishes are also offered in a range of different portion sizes to cater for children and OAPs.

The Bull and Butcher is also geared for children with a large play area with two bouncy castles, swings and slides and even a pets corner which includes three Shetland ponies and rabbits.

Ann is delighted to win the award. She comments: “It’s a great feeling to win; we have some celebrating to do! Behind every winner is a great team and that is what I have here at the Bull and Butcher.

“The pub has a lovely oldie worldy feel to it and I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved in our five and a half years here. I’ve always loved the pub, it was my local, and I always knew it had lots of potential.”

Ann adds: “I want to say a huge thank you to my customers.  It is their loyalty and support that helped us to win this award. Without them there wouldn’t be a pub!”

Punch’s operations manager Gary Barker adds: “We’re absolutely delighted that Ann and her team have won.  It’s a real credit to Ann who is an excellent licensee and runs a fantastic pub.  Congratulations!”
