An Ivybridge pub has been recognised as a Regional Champion and for delivering the best community experience to customers in Devonshire.

Punch Taverns, the largest pub company in the UK, have rewarded The Duke of Cornwall, Ivybridge with a 2008 Shine Award – which commends those truly exceptional pubs from its 8,400 strong estate.

Licensees David Smith and Marie Stuckey won the ‘Best Community Experience’ category and were presented with their award at a prestigious ceremony earlier this week at Bovey Castle, Dartmoor National Park.

The Duke of Cornwall fought off tough competition from twelve other regional finalists who had been short listed from over a 1000 pubs, nominated from all over the UK.

The judges gave particular praise to ‘a cosy olde world pub which is superb in ambience, service and appeal’. They noted that the staff ‘are very helpful and obliging and talk about ‘What’s On’ which includes entertainment for all ages, holidays aboard and delivering food to the local Old Peoples home.’  The judge also commented: “this would definitely be my local and I would recommend to all!”

Punch’s regional operations director Jonathan Walters commented: “What a fantastic event and a great opportunity to recognise these truly outstanding pubs.  We received over 100 nominations in this region so to be crowned category winners is an exceptional achievement – well done!”

And licensees David Smith and Marie Stuckey are delighted with the accolade: “The greatest part in winning the best community experience is that it reflects on what a fantastic community we have.  We serve people from 18 – 88 and it works, proving that the traditional back street pub is what people still want.  Then to go on and become the Regional Champion was completely amazing, it reminds us that all that the hard work we do to meet the high standards is certainly worth while.  It was an amazing day.”

As well as their trophy, David and Marie also received a £500 gift experience voucher and will join the other Regional Champions at a prestigious Champions Dinner event taking place on 21st May at Hampton Court Palace in London.
