The Punch estate

Punch pubs are as varied as the communities they serve, acting as a focus for the social and sporting lives of local people. All our pubs are community locals of one sort or another. We provide for every sector of the community with outlets offering drink, food, TV sport, live music and more, as well as a location for team events and participation sports.

The pub brings people together and provides for their needs, changing and adapting with those needs to remain central to the lives of many. Pubs go beyond being somewhere to drink and eat. They are a fundamental part of British life, forming part of the social and economic fabric of the country, their locality and the lives of their customers.

Our pub portfolio covers a broad range of segments. By recognising the needs of each segment we are able to identify the requirements of each licensee.

Punch sector definitions

Basic Local
These are community pubs, mostly located in high density residential areas. Trade is focused on regular drinkers and tends to be wet led with little food. Beer, cider and spirits are the big sellers. Most show televised sport. Customers are generally blue collar workers and the proportion of female customers is relatively low.

Mid Market Local
The ‘traditional British pub’ as depicted in television soaps. Mid market locals are mostly situated in middle market residential areas and most offer some sort of food. There may also be themed evenings, quizzes, darts or pool. Customers tend to use the pub to meet friends and relax.

City Local
As the name suggests, these are found in city centres but away from the young person's circuit. Trading is highly competitive and the offer will include basic pub food and snacks. Local workers and shoppers provide passing trade in the daytime - residents will normally use the pub in the evening.

Upmarket Local
While still community pubs, these are high class outlets found in low density housing areas. The business will be wet led, but with a catering kitchen providing good food. Customers reflect the pub’s location – white collar workers and professionals with a higher proportion of women than most other locals.

Premium Dining
These are food led pubs in more upmarket areas. Restaurant quality food served with flair will account for more than 25% of sales. Additional facilities are likely to include beer gardens, play areas and parking. Customers tend to plan visits, sometimes around special occasions.

Value Dining
Focusing on food but in less upmarket areas than the premium dining segment. Value for money is the watch word, so pubs often attract families.

Chameleon
Centrally located but the pubs character changes from day to night to attract different types of customers. The venue may be a subdued coffee bar in the day serving office workers and shoppers, but a vibrant young people’s bar with loud music by night.
Back to sectors

Circuit
Pubs will be on or near the young person’s circuit. Expect loud music, possibly a dress code and door staff. Food is less important, while lager and alcopops generate strong sales.
Back to sectors

Venue
Distinctive, wet led pubs that draw clientele from a wide catchment area because they offer something special. This may be live music or entertainers. The pub could also be a meeting point for a specific customer group, for example bikers.
