Profiles: Day in the life of a Regional Operations Director
7.40am – 10.15am: Working from my office at home. Download email after 2 days away at the monthly regional team meeting. Read and deal with as many issues as possible and plan items that need additional information to complete. Check off yesterday’s 'to do' list and add or remove items. Return to office. Email key action points from regional meeting to Business Relationship Managers and Property team. Plan next three breakfast meeting dates and email to Business Relationship Managers. Finalise plans for midday review with one of our small multiple operators including phone conversation with Credit team at Burton to chase outstanding issues relating to account reconciliation queries. Confirm agenda for review and trade visits with one of my Business Relationship Managers this afternoon, including a fire fighting issue caused by the abandonment of one of our pubs, earlier in the week. Contact another one of my trusted and most experienced Business Relationship Managers, who has worked in the Wolverhampton area for several years for any contacts she has that may be in a position to help re-open the pub by the end of the week which would avoid the need to board up the pub – always the least favourable and last option to protect the company’s assets. She takes the opportunity to update me on progress to resolve problems with the investment project at another of our pubs in Stourbridge and we agree the next steps, including the need to bring in our surveyor. Finally, before leaving for the day’s visits, I study the new exception report from an accountant with the head office Knowledge team, relating to the purchase of non-beer products and draw up a list of pubs that need Business Relationship Managers action. 10.15am – 12.30pm: Drop in visit to two pubs transferring from the Spirit estate. 12.30pm – 1.45pm: Review meeting at same pub with a multiple licensee to find out how business is going and help resolve any issues. 1.45pm – 6.15pm: Travel to Wolverhampton to meet one of my Business Relationship Managers at another of our pubs, a ‘community local’, which is bedecked with England flags! A quick drop in visit to meet the licensee and discuss his plans for the World Cup. Off in one car to Claverley we talk about outstanding issues as we drive. Both of us catch up with phone messages when we arrive at our destination, a closed pub which we are going to assess. We meet two interested parties over the next hour, one of which looks a good prospect and an offer is made to act as 'caretaker' on a temporary agreement to secure the pub and get it open as soon as possible. They will let us know tomorrow if they are interested but the signs look good. We then move on to visit another pub in Seisdon, a pleasant village pub, where we sign up the rent review documentation and agree to install Carling Extra Cold lager. The licensee has carried out a recent garden development and is asking for advice to provide an external area with an awning to prepare for the smoking ban. A quick check of the cellar completes a positive visit. Back to collect my car. The journey home is a good time to catch up on phone calls to Business Relationship Managers.
