Industry background: Beer supply
The UK currently has the following major national brewers:
Carlsberg UK
Coors Brewers
Diageo
Inbev UK
Scottish Courage
These brewers do not operate either tied or managed estates and as a result guaranteed sales are no longer available through owned outlets. The on trade market consists of retail outlets owned and operated by a combination of owners. These are either independent pub retailing groups, operating on either a managed or tenanted/lease model or the regional and smaller brewers who may operate a combination of managed/tenanted/lease outlets.
The brewers have to compete to supply through either individual arrangements with free houses or supply agreements with the pub groups and regional/small brewers. We believe that competition to secure these supply arrangements takes place mainly on price, brand strength and promotional support. Quality of product and innovation are increasingly important factors in determining brewers market share and driving change in the industry. |
