Punch resolves to restore resolution
Press Release
Punch Pub Company is investing £1.2 million to ensure everything is ship shape at a landmark Whitby pub and club.

The Resolution Club on Skinner Street, named after Captain James Cook’s second expeditionary vessel the Whitby-built Resolution, is undergoing a major refurbishment between now and December.

The cash – Punch’s largest ever investment in a single outlet – will be used to create a 150 person capacity function room, new bar areas and 20 en suite letting rooms with stunning views over Whitby town and the estuary.

The members club, currently on the ground floor, will be moved down to the lower ground floor level.

Investment manager Derek Giles said: “Punch Pub Company acquired the Resolution, a Grade II listed building, last year. While it was in a poor state of repair and even derelict in parts we could see a great deal of potential there.

“We are delighted to announce plans to restore the pub to its former glory have been approved by the local authorities and we welcome their support on the project.”

Punch has appointed Philip Millson Architecture Ltd of Hyde, Greater Manchester, as designer and project manager.

Derek added: “Work begins this week and wherever possible we will be incorporating original architectural features and finishings into the design to preserve the heritage of this landmark building.”

Peter and Maureen Taylor will take over as licensees at the Resolution when it reopens just before Christmas. The couple have been running another highly successful Punch Pub Company outlet, the Alma in Barnsley, for the last eight years.

Maureen said: “Punch approached us about leasing the Resolution because they needed someone with past experience of pubs, clubs and hotels all rolled together.

“We have that experience and really liked the sound of the challenge. In fact, it was an honour to be asked!

“We will be very sad to leave the Alma but you cannot keep two pubs running and be completely hands on at both. The Resolution has so much potential and we are looking forward to getting started.”

The Resolution will continue trading until 2 September, before closing completely to make way for the refurbishment.
