Punch pub becomes first in Scotland to win Beautiful Beer award
Press Release

The New Mains of Scotstown Inn in Aberdeen has become the first pub in Scotland to achieve a Beautiful Beer Award. Licensees Martin Young & Claire Knox received their Gold Award from the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, John Reynolds.

Presenting the Award, Mr Reynolds said, “Enjoying a refreshing glass of beer in the pub is one of the great pleasures of life in this country. Martin, Claire and their team have clearly invested time and effort in ensuring that the beer they serve is always top quality, and they deserve to win this first Beautiful Beer Award in Scotland.”

The team at the Punch Taverns pub went through a rigorous ‘cellar to glass’ assessment in order to achieve the Award and receive a Beautiful Beer plaque.  Martin commented, “We pride ourselves on the quality of our beer at The New Mains of Scotstown, so it’s great to receive this external recognition. The Beautiful Beer plaque on the wall tells customers that when they order a beer in here, they can be guaranteed it’s a great one.”

The Beautiful Beer Awards were launched by the British Beer & Pub Association in March this year. They are designed to recognise pubs delivering ‘excellence in beer’, and to give pubgoers a ‘badge of quality assurance’ that helps them choose a pub where they can be guaranteed a great beer.  To date, around 100 Awards have been given to pubs, and applications have been received from managed, tenanted and freehouses.

Beautiful Beer is the beer and pub industry’s campaign to revitalise the image of beer. It is led by the BBPA, with the support of its member brewers and pub companies and other industry bodies.

Beautiful Beer is the ‘umbrella’ brand for a number of activities, targeting the licensed trade and consumers, with the aim of encouraging more people to make beer their drink of choice on more occasions. Trade activity will focus on training licensees and their staff on beer standards and quality, as ‘better beer makes better business’. Consumer PR will promote beer’s diversity, its natural ingredients and its affinity with a range of foods, to encourage people to consider it on more occasions than they do currently.
