Summer looks bright for Punch pubs
Press Release

Punch Taverns has unveiled two new support initiatives to help its publicans make the most of the summer months.

Retailers from the pubco’s leased and tenanted estate can sign up for a half day training course called Profit Through Sport, while a comprehensive Summer 06 marketing brochure packed with deals specifically designed for boosting summer trade has been sent to every pub.

Profit Through Sport (PTS) is an extension of Punch’s award winning Profit Through Quality course and encourages delegates to make better use of televised sporting events.

Efficient, good quality service standards, pre and post match customer activities, simple snack food and creating a memorable atmosphere are all covered off during PTS sessions, which run until the end of May.

Punch’s retail standards operations manager Kiernan Lynch said: “The World Cup will be the sporting event of the summer, although the techniques retailers pick up from PTS can be used to generate sales all year round.  Pubs need to position themselves as the perfect venue for watching live sport and then provide a winning customer experience to encourage repeat business.”

Punch retailer Wayne Clayton, who runs the Branston Arms in Burton upon Trent, attended a trial version of the PTS course.

He said: “I was impressed by the content.  There are lots of good pointers for pubs showing live sport, particularly when it comes to pre-publicising events and creating a memorable atmosphere on match day.”

Sport is also an important part of Punch’s 28 page Summer 06 brochure, with special offers on branded World Cup kits, big screen TVs and point of sale material all included.

Retailers can also access tips on arranging a summer barbeque, creating outdoor trading areas and applying for a Temporary Event Notice.

Punch’s category manager Stephen Martin said: “The summer months mean more people looking to spend time in their local, eating and drinking as they enjoy the company of friends and family.

“We have pulled together a host of exciting ideas and competitively priced deals to help our retailers prepare for the summer and capitalise on the opportunities longer evenings and warmer weather present.”
