Matt Roberts, Purchasing Manager

1/1

What has been your career journey with Punch?

“I joined Punch 8 years ago in the Contact Centre as a Telephone Account Manager.  I was only intending to stay a few months but 18 months later I was ready for my next challenge as Team Leader of the Outbound Sales team.

The sales and marketing experience I had gained was hugely useful when the opportunity arose to progress to Purchasing and Category Coordinator, looking after wines and spirits.

During the next three and a half years, I worked closely with suppliers and was able to grow the wine range at Punch, increasing margin in a sustainable way and achieving growth in each category within the Leased and Tenanted estate. I also supported our Retail pubs on ranging and insight for their wine menus.

In Jan 2017, I was promoted to Purchasing Manager, working across all drinks categories.  This broader role involved marketing along with interaction with suppliers to secure strong commercial terms on products, implementing the conditions of contracts and, more recently, unlocking extra value for our Retail Division through partnership agreements.

With the recent changes to our distribution contracts, it has been really important to be reactive to the needs of the business, such as listing a new wine range through Marston’s which is already in strong growth.  My role is always evolving with lots of opportunities to do new things.”

What support and development have you had in your time at Punch?

“In 2016 I completed my Level 6 Chartered Institute Marketing Diploma, which was wholly funded by Punch.  This has enabled me to be more strategic and analytical, both in my approach and the measurement of campaigns to ensure success.

Punch has always been a supportive place to work. I have been fortunate to have great line managers, keen to see me develop.  I have been actively encouraged to take courses that have helped me tap into my potential.  There is a culture in Punch that drives you to look at new opportunities.”

What is it like working for Punch?

“There are always people willing to help and a great sociable atmosphere. There is also an attitude and culture within Punch where people are willing to go above and beyond.”

Would you recommend working for Punch to others?

“Yes, absolutely.  I think my 8 years is testament to my commitment to Punch and also the commitment that Punch has made to my development.”
